  • Emergency sewer repairs – Percy Road, Bournemouth

Percy Road in Boscombe will remain closed for several more weeks to enable us to carry out essential monitoring work.

    Percy Road - Bournemouth

    What’s going on?

Emergency repairs to the inside of Bournemouth coastal interceptor sewer were completed in March 2017 – four weeks ahead of schedule – but it was not possible to re-open Percy Road as we needed to continue monitoring the ground to ensure it was safe to carry out reinstatement works.

The road was initially closed in September 2016, with a diversion in place via Michelgrove Road, Boscombe Cliff Road and Byron Road. We were hopeful that the road would be re-opened in December 2017, but anticipated a second closure would be necessary in March 2018 to complete repairs to utilities that couldn’t be carried out at this time.

Further monitoring works and removal of other restrictions mean that we are now able to complete all repairs without needing to close Percy Road in March. However, this will mean that the current road closure will be extended until mid-February 2018 to enable all repairs. Once final reinstatements are complete the road will be permanently re-opened.

Project manager Joe Edmunds said: “This has been a highly unusual and complex scheme and we needed to be absolutely certain the road was safe before carrying out reinstatement.

“Residents have been incredibly patient while work has been in progress and we thank them once again for that. We apologise for any inconvenience to them and road users in the area.

"We’re sorry for any inconvenience caused by our work and thank residents and motorists for their continued patience and cooperation.”

    A bespoke solution

To allow repairs to be carried out to the CIS, a temporary overland pipe was installed in order to maintain sewerage services.

This pipe ran from an access point on Boscombe Chine Gardens via Boscombe Overcliff to Fisherman’s Walk near Montague Road – a dstance of around 2.4km.
