  • Play area cleaned up by Water Force volunteers

Our staff brought a new lease of life to a children’s playground in Somerset as part of a new volunteering project.

Ahead of national Volunteers Week, which starts on Friday, five members of our operations management team spent a day cleaning up the play area in Beckington, near Frome.

Ashlea Lane, director of water supply, explained: "One of our employees noticed on their local Facebook group that there were a lot of complaints about the state of the play park, with graffiti and dirt on the equipment.

"The park has been there since the year 2000 and hadn't been properly cleaned since, so we thought we could do something about it by volunteering our time."

We launched our Water Force volunteering scheme earlier this year, with all 2,000-plus employees in our region encouraged to take part.

Other Water Force projects have included tree planting, dog walking and conservation work.

"Every staff member at Wessex Water can spend a day volunteering for a community project, either as an individual or as part of a group," Ashlea said.

"This is great for team building exercises and, more importantly, giving something back and engaging with the communities that we serve."
